Curcumin may Help Prevent Onset of Diabetes in High-Risk Patients
A new study conducted by researchers in Thailand has identified a compound present in curry spice that may prevent diabetes in high risk patients.
According to the study, published in the journal Diabetes Care, a compound known as curcumin present in turmeric may prevent the onset of diabetes in people who are viewed as having the highest risk of getting the disease. “Because of its benefits and safety, we propose that curcumin extract may be used for an intervention therapy for the prediabetes population”, lead researcher Somlak Chuengsamarn of Srinakharinwirot University in Nakomnayok said.

The researchers said that curcumin’s ability to fight inflammation and oxidative damage to the body cells could be the reason for lowering the chances of diabetes.

The researchers conducted the study on 240 people who were viewed as having prediabetes, characterized by high blood sugar levels, and who were given capsules containing 250 mg of “curcuminoids”, curcumin supplements.
