Council Warns Fake Vodka may Cause Blindness

by Rajashri on Sep 2 2008 3:19 PM

South Tyneside Council's environmental health department has warned that drinking counterfeit Imperial Vodka on sale in shops in Northumberland and London could lead to blindness.

"There is no problem with Imperial Vodka sold by Spar shops," said Michael Clare, lead member for the environment, housing and transport council. "But consumers finding this Spar product on sale elsewhere should alert our environmental health service.

Methanol is normally found in vodka at very low levels, but at high levels can cause poisoning, which can result in blindness."

The fake vodka smells like nail paint and has the code number QI:1445c. Consumers who find this are encouraged to report to the council's environmental health service on 427 1717.
