Cosmetic Implants Not So Safe After All

by Rajshri on May 21 2008 2:45 PM

Beauty enhancing implants may do the trick in the short term, but they do have considerable side effects in the long term, a new study has found.

The study led by Jaume Alijotas-Reig, of Vall d'Hebron University, Barcelona found that safety of implant gels was no longer a assured event and people were likely to develop severe immune reactions to these supposedly biocompatible gels.

The study involved 25 patients; all of whom went on to develop severe side effects like swelling, hardening of skin, fever, arthritis and dryness of mouth over 12 months after they received the implants.

“Considering the increased use of polyalkylimide implants… physicians should be aware that intermediate or delayed adverse effects can occur," the researchers concluded.

The details are published in the latest issue of the journal Archives of Dermatology.
