Concussion Recovery can be Hastened by Mental Rest
A new study indicates that several days of mental rest rather than a return to whirlwind activity can hasten recovery from concussion in kids.
The study conducted by researchers at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia and Boston Children's Hospital says that returning to school and resuming routine activities too soon can actually delay recovery.

The study involved 335 people aged 8 to 23 who had suffered a concussion. All participants reported the amount of mental activity they engaged in ranging from complete mental rest; minimal mental activity; moderate mental activity; significant mental activity; or full mental activity. Results indicated that those who engaged in most mental activity took about 100 days to completely recover, while those who gave their brains time to heal took 43 days to completely recover.

"After a concussion, we recommend rest because kids tend to do too much," said the study's lead author, Dr. Naomi Brown, a physician in the division of sports medicine at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The findings appear in the latest issue of the journal Pediatrics.
