Coimbatore: Mushrooming Dyeing Units Polluting Water Bodies

The deteriorating condition of River Noyyal in Coimbatore is being ignored by authorities even as increasing illegal dyeing units continue to discharge industrial effluents into the river. Farmers Association President S. Murugan said the farmlands are getting affected as effluent water from illegal dyeing units gets mixed with the river water, and thus affects the crops.

"Lands are very much affected due to discharge of effluent water from illegal dyeing units across River Noyyal. It has been reported that over 300 illegal dyeing units are functioning as cottage industries which let the untreated effluent water into the river," said Murugan.

Farmers also added that neither the government, nor the pollution control board, has taken any initiative towards the growing concern. They also fear that in near future this effluent discharge will lead to skin diseases and other ailments.

Farmers in the city also expressed their concern over most of their farmlands inclusive of coconut groves and sugarcane cultivation being badly been affected.(ANI)
