Chronic Kidney Disease Patients to Benefit from City Corporation’s Free Dialysis

For the first time in India a city corporation is planning to set up two dialysis centres where dialysis would be provided free of cost to patients. The corporation of Chennai, South India is going to offer free dialysis to patients suffering from chronic kidney disease at two of its diagnostic laboratories near Valluvar Kottam and in Perambur. At a meeting on Friday the Chennai Corporation Council approved the resolution for allotting Rs.50 lakh needed for equipment and outsourcing of manpower in the two centres.

Speaking to the press after the meeting, Mayor M. Subramanian said, "Many patients with kidney failure find it hard to pay for weekly dialysis. The labs will serve four to five patients a day. We suggest people make appointments in advance."

The corporation proposes to have two hemodialysis machines, doctors, technicians and assistants in each centre. The facility which is likely to benefit 25,000 people is to be extended to other zones depending on the patronage.

The kidney is incapable of filtering body fluids in patients with chronic kidney failure. In a dialysis procedure the hemodialysis machine enables fluid removal because patients with chronic kidney failure pass very little or no urine at all.
