Chennai Leather Fair Causes PETA Furore
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) activists staged demonstration against India International Leather Fair being held in Chennai.
PETA activists were seen wearing formal suits while holding masks of cows and horses along with placards.

Hemani, campaign coordinator of PETA, said their aim was to sensitize people about animal cruelty and to raise awareness against use of leather.

"We are here to remind people that leather is a skin of an animal that was tortured and did not want to die. Today when the Indian International Leather fair is happening in Chennai we have come here because we have documented evidence of the kind of cruelty that goes on in this leather industry," said Hemani.

Hemani further said that the animal right group had demanded on several occasions for specific norms to be followed by the leather manufactures to minimize animal suffering, which were ignored.

"We have also been repeatedly approaching the leather industry to create some kind of minimal basic norms which they refuse to do, this is the reason we have consistently been protesting against the use of leather. We want people to know that every animal that dies for leather suffers tremendously," she said.

The International fair organised by the India Trade Promotion Organisation began on Monday and will go on till Thursday.
