Chandipura Virus Claims 17 Lives in Gujarat
Chandipura Encephalitis virus has claimed the lives of 17 people in Gujarat, health officials announced today. They also said that a further 29 cases have been detected in Vadodara, Panchmahal and Kheda districts.
Officials in the state are in close contact with the experts of National Institute of Virology (NIV) Pune and the National Institute of Communicable Diseases in order to take steps to tackle this menace.

According to the information released from the state health officials, Chandipura virus causes primary symptoms like loose motions, vomiting with high grade for short duration followed by convulsions. The virus spreads through a pest called sandfly, which commonly inhabits cracks in walls.

Officials said the sandflies were commonly seen in mud houses that had cow dung plastered to walls. They added that insecticides are being sprayed by the Malaria control department as a precautionary measure.
