CardioMessenger Smart device, developed by BIOTRONIK received the CE mark to introduce the device to the European market.
The device is about the size of a smartphone and connects the pacemaker and implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) wearers to their physician enabling safer, more efficient treatment anywhere in the world.
AdvertisementThe device is fully automatic, passing the data through the GSM cellular network to physicians without any interaction from the patients. The data is sent to the BIOTRONIK Home Monitoring system on a daily basis and whenever an abnormal cardiac event is detected, letting cardiologists focus immediately on the patients in need of attention.
"Home Monitoring alerts me to relevant changes in patient or device status, ensuring that I always see the right patient at the right time," said Dr. Volker Leonhardt, Director of telemedicine at Pacemaker and ICD Center (HIZ), Berlin.
The in-time study, which was conducted to study the benefit of the device for patients with heart failure, reported a reduction in mortality by 50%. "I can keep track of each patient without subjecting him to needlessly intrusive in-person follow-ups and react quickly when necessary. This has clear clinical advantages for the patient, especially for heart failure patients", added Dr. Leonhardt.
