Cancer Detected by Baking Soda Ingredient?

by Rajshri on May 31 2008 1:02 PM

Cambridge University researchers have claimed that an ingredient used in baking soda can also detect cancer through Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI).

The study said that cancer tissues become more acidic than their surrounding tissues and can be used as a marker by boosting MRI sensitivity over 20,000 times. The research team said that it was possible to detect cancer because the MRI could spot the molecules used by tumors to make energy.

Ideally the human body has a balanced pH by canceling out more acidic and alkaline contents. However in cancer this balance is disrupted and can be used to diagnose tumors early. This method can also be used to assess the progress of cancer treatment.

The details of the study appear in the journal Nature.
