Canada Moves Toward Banning BPA Bottles

by Rajashri on Oct 18 2008 2:24 PM

The Canadian government has declared the hazardous chemical bisphenol A as a toxic substance in what may be a first step to banning the chemical used in baby bottles.

"Today's confirmation of our ban on BPA in baby bottles proves that our government did the right thing in taking action to protect the health and environment for all Canadians," said a statement issued by Environment Minister John Baird.

BPA has aroused a fierce debate in medical circles with the European Union and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration saying the chemical is safe. But the FDA has constituted a panel to review the potential toxicity of the chemical.

BPA is thought to affect reproductive development and cause hormone-related problems. Many US states are considering banning the chemical in baby bottles, while some manufacturers have also started making BPA-free baby bottles.
