Can Panic Disorder Increase Risk of Heart Disease?

by Savitha C Muppala on Dec 16 2008 6:49 PM

A study conducted by British researchers involving 404,654 people in Britain, showed a high risk of heart disease among victims of panic attacks and disorders, more pronounced for those below 50 years of age.

The research also pointed out that death due to heart disease for people diagnosed with panic disorder was actually reduced among all age groups.

Dr. Kate Walters of University College London who led the research, said, "Not much is known about the relationship between panic disorder and cardiac disease. The symptoms of panic attacks can closely mimic those of a heart attack or acute cardiac disease, and it seems that there may be a complex relationship between them."

The study is published in the European Heart Journal.
