Cadaver Donation Helps Osmania Hospital To Conduct First Liver Transplant Surgery
Doctors at the Osmania General Hospital (OGH), Telangana, India are attempting to conduct the first liver transplant surgery.
Inukonda Mamatha (57) was declared brain dead by the attending doctors at Care Hospitals, Banjara Hills and the family members came forward to donate her organs. The hospital has earlier done kidney transplant surgeries, both live and cadaver, but this is the first time that a government hospital is attempting to take such a surgery in Andhra Pradesh.

Family members of Mamatha, a resident of Saroornagar and a native of Warangal district, collapsed all of a sudden and was rushed to a local hospital. As her condition did not improve, she was shifted to Care Hospitals.

Jeevandan, the government cadaver transplantation scheme works as part of the hospitals with regard to the ethical issues surrounding live and deceased donor organ donation.

Coordinators from Jeevandan contacted the family members of the deceased for a possible organ donation and they readily accepted the possibility of taking up organ donation.

Two kidneys, liver, two heart valves and two corneas were retrieved and sent to various hospitals for transplantation. The donated liver was sent to OGH where the surgeons took up the transplant process.
