BMC Asks PSUs to Mosquito-Proof Empty Tracts of Land

Public sector undertakings in Mumbai find themselves in the cross hairs of Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) which has found the rise of malaria directly associated with huge tracts of lands owned by such undertakings in the neighborhoods.

Lalbaug, Worli, Parel, Kurla, Ghatkopar and Andheri were identified by mosquito abatement committee of BMC as posing a high risk of malaria with nearly 60 percent of malaria cases last year attributed to these areas.

Malaria is caused by a parasite that enters blood through the bite of an infected mosquito. It is characterized by fever, vomiting, shivering, sweating and other symptoms.

The BMC has now given a deadline of April 30 for the public sector undertakings to make their property mosquito-proof and revealed that it will carry out an inspection during May 1 to May 15.

“The major land owning authorities in Mumbai are the railways, Mumbai Port Trust (MbPT), National Textile Corporation (NTC), public works department (PWD) and central public works department CPWD. The authorities will be asked to mosquito-proof their lands. From May 1 to 15, the BMC will check to see the extent to which these agencies have mosquito-proofed their lands”, additional municipal commissioner, Manisha Mhaiskar said.
