Be a Blood Donor On This National Voluntary Blood Donation Day 2015
National Voluntary Blood Donation Day is observed on October 1 every year to mark the need and importance of blood in the life of an individual, promote the practice of voluntary blood donation, achieve the target of blood donation and prevent the blood transmitting diseases.
About 30-35 percent of the total donations are by family and replacement donors for patients.

For this year, the theme of the Day has been set as ‘Blood donors bring a ray of hope. Be a regular blood donor.’

The day is observed to mark the birthday of Professor J G Jolly, former head of department of transfusion medicine at PGI Chandigarh, who is credited with starting the first transfusion medicine department in the country and developing transfusion as a specialty in India.

To mark the event, the State Blood Transfusion Council (SBTC), Odisha conducts awareness rally from Ekamra Haat to Jaydev Bhavan followed by a state-level program on voluntary blood donation.

The blood donation event will be organized in collaboration with the Indian Red Cross Society (Odisha State Branch), Odisha State AIDS Control Society and Health and Family Welfare Department.
