Doctors at the Malar hospital, a subsidiary of Fortis health care, in Chennai, have saved the life of a baby born with a rare congenital heart defect by using the anti-impotence drug Viagra. The 4-month-old baby girl named Tanisha, had very high blood pressure in the right lung, which was controlled using the blue pill.

"She had cyanotica congenital heart defect, which affects only one in a lakh. Her heart was on the right side with a hole in it coupled with an ineffective and underdeveloped right lung," cardiac surgeon K R Balakrishnan said.

Tanisha's parents Subrata and Dipa Saha of Kolkata brought her to Chennai on the advice of her aunt Kalpana Sabui. Tanisha used to get frequent respiratory attacks and would sometimes turn blue due to the presence of the heart defect.

She had to endure four respiratory attacks while travelling from Kolkata to Chennai in early April.
