Babies Prone to Crib Accidents

Falls from cribs, playpens and bassinets cause injury to more than 10,000 infants each year. Nearly 113 infants succumb to such accidents each year.

A report released as part of an exhaustive 19 year study has outlined the reason behind crib accidents which has caused many babies needing emergency care.

Lisa Hench, who pleaded guilty to eight counts of causing corporal injury to a child, has been sentenced to two years of imprisonment.

Since the head is large, most babies are heavy at the top and they easily fall off the cribs. They fall head first as they are unable to take the impact on their arms.

The study also points out that cribs need to be better designed to protect babies from falls and injuries. Designers must take care to offer maximum protection in playpens and bassinets to avoid injuries to babies.
