Autoimmune Disease Increases Risk of Pulmonary Embolism
A new study by Swedish researchers has found that the risk of developing pulmonary embolism (PE) is high among patients who suffer from any form of autoimmune disease.
The conclusion comes after researchers from the Malmo University studied more than 535,000 hospitalized cases of more than 33 forms of autoimmune diseases between 1964 and 2008 and found that the risk of developing PE was six times more when compared to other people.

Lead researcher Dr Bengt Zoller said that people with autoimmune diseases were 50 percent more likely to develop PE between two and five years after hospitalization. The study has been published in the journal The Lancet.

“Our results show that autoimmune disorders affect the risk of hospital admission for pulmonary embolism in men and women of all ages 33 autoimmune diseases were associated with significantly increased risks of pulmonary embolism during the first year after admission”, the researchers wrote in the report.
