Australian Govt Cracks Down on Aged Care Home for Placing Residents at Risk

TheAustralian government has come down strongly on an aged care home in Adelaide for its failings. Its home provider status has been revoked and funds are suspended.

A series of health and safety problems were uncovered during an investigation of the Norwood Nursing Home at Oakden this month.

Seniors have fulfilled their family commitments and look forward to spending their last days basking in the love, care and concern of their family.

It was found residents were being given inadequate care and were being treated by agency staff who lacked skills and knowledge.

The Federal Minister for Ageing, Justine Elliot, says the matter is extremely serious.

Ms Elliot says the home's provider status has been revoked and federal funding is blocked to new residents for six months.

"We don't take this action very lightly, this is a very serious concern and the main issue is the safety and health and welfare of those older residents of Norwood Nursing Home," she said.

"The nursing home isn't eligible to receive subsidies for any new residents during that period of six months, we'll also have assessors from the accreditation agency on site until the serious risk is mitigated.

The independent Aged Care Standards Accreditation Agency has slammed the Raffin Place, Calamvale in Brisbane for not taking adequate care of inmates, but the latter dispute the claim.

"So we have these tough measures in place to make sure the nursing home can comply with its responsibilities."

The chairman of the nursing home's board, Joseph Bayer, has released a statement saying the home is committed to the highest level of care.

But Mr Bayer has acknowledged that improvements need to be made and says the board is working closely with the aged care standards agency to achieve them, ABC News reported.
