Asthmatic Women may Face Worsening Symptoms Due to Menstrual Cycle
A new study published in the American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine reveals that asthmatic women may find their respiratory symptoms worsening due to their menstrual cycle.
The study has been conducted by researchers at Haukeland University Hospital in Norway and included nearly 4,000 women, all of whom had regular 28-day menstrual cycle and were not taking any hormonal contraceptives.

The researchers found that asthma symptoms were more severe during ovulation and suggested that the symptoms can be brought under control by adapting their medication.

“We found that respiratory symptoms varied significantly during the menstrual cycle. There were large changes in symptom incidence through the cycle for all symptoms. Adjustment of asthma medication to the menstrual cycle may potentially improve the efficacy of asthma treatment and reduce disability and health costs related to asthma in women”, the researchers wrote in their report.
