Gonorrhea is a sexually transmitted disease which is caused by Neisseria gonorrhoeae bacterium. Symptoms of the disease mainly involves a burning sensation during urination and penis discharge in men, while women may have vaginal discharge and pelvic pain.
Gonorrhea is very common in the United States and about 350,000 people were diagnosed with the disease in 2014. If the disease is left untreated it would result in chronic pelvic pain or result in fertility problems. Pregnant women can infect the infant resulting in a serious eye infection. Dr.Jonathan Mermin, Director of CDC’S National Center for HIV/AIDS , Viral Hepatitis, Sexually transmitted disease and Tuberculosis prevention said that the rising resistance to antibiotics and very little treatment options will result in the failure of future gonorrhea treatment in the U.S.
In the beginning, the use of antibiotics for the treatment of gonorrhea proved to be beneficial, but the bacteria being smart was able to slowly crop down each antibiotic that was coming in its way and continues to mutate rapidly.
The CDC recommends multidrug therapy for the treatment of gonorrhea. Combination therapy of azithromycin with ceftriaxone is now used for gonorrhea due to the efficacy of the treatment and also due to the slow resistance developed to the drug. If Gonorrhea remains untreated it can result in HIV infections and problems in pregnancy.
