Antibiotic Resistance Compared to Global Warming
Antibiotics have been one of the most powerful weapons for doctors to treat infections. However the rise in drug resistant infections over the last few years mean that even the most powerful antibiotic is rendered impotent and England’s chief medical officer said that the situation is comparable to global warming.
Professor Dame Sally Davies said that the rise in drug resistant bacteria is making the current generation of antibiotics redundant and there were no new antibiotics that could replace them.

She also said that the ineffectiveness of antibiotics could mean that even a routine operation could turn deadly.

“It is clear that we might not ever see global warming, the apocalyptic scenario is that when I need a new hip in 20 years I'll die from a routine infection because we've run out of antibiotics. It is very serious, and it's very serious because we are not using our antibiotics effectively in countries”, Professor Davies said.
