Yoga Injuries on the Rise Due to Lack of Regulation: Report

Early Show Consumer Correspondent Susan Koeppen has said that while Americans spend nearly 6 billion dollars a year on yoga classes and products, there needs to be a regulation when they practice the art.

According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the number of yoga injuries rose from more than 3,700 in 2004 to more than 4,400 in 2006, reports CBS News.

Rachel Schneider, 27, who suffered from back pain, says that, while yoga brought calmness to her life with "a little bit of spirituality" and physicality, it ultimately caused two bulging disks which left her screaming in pain.

She shares her experience of getting injured because of yoga, an exercise that she loved.

And Koeppen explained how the inadequate oversight was leading to unqualified teachers being at the helm of yoga classes and students getting hurt in those classes.

this is just plain ridiculous. Why dont we focus on regulating things that actually harm us, like cosmetic and self care products containing carcinogens.

I’ve been doing yoga, both hatha yoga and kriya for almost five years now and I haven’t suffered any negative side-effects. In fact, I can say that they have transformed my life in a very positive way. I think the problem arises when people try things out from the wrong source or after they see something on TV or after reading some book. I was initiated by Sadhguru Jaggi Vasudev of Isha Foundation, and I can definitely say I haven’t had any slipped discs or broken backs ever since. There are a couple of videos on youtube where he talks about improper yoga and the hazards of it. You can get more details about Isha programs from their website www.ishafoundation.org The Dangers of Improper Yoga www.youtube.com/watch?v=bV7BrUs9HFQ The Importance of Proper Yoga Instruction www.youtube.com/watch?v=8V9NAtl2YAM
