A bad hair day at work due to a co-worker's rude behavior can cause us to brood and feel stressed out. Not only do we feel negative about the whole experience, there are chances we just cannot get the episode out of our system.
At such times, we tend to carry the stress at the workplace to our home. This can cause a strain on family relationships.
Hostility at the workplace has a lasting effect. This stress when carried home can trigger domestic quarrels, angry words and resentment among family members. The family gets so stressed out that they further carry this negative effect to their workplace the next day. In effect, this becomes a cycle of negative emotions being carried back and forth from office to home.
A good way to help this situation from getting worse is for the employee to draw the support of employee assistance programs or stress management programs so that the workplace stress is handled well before it seeps into home. This way, the family can be insulated from the ill-effects of 'passive' workplace stress.
