NSW Attorney-General John Hatzistergos has revealed that people who have worked in the state and have been exposed to asbestos and other toxic substances can avail a free medical test.

"(It is) an appropriate time for people to seek out information about the potential risks of being exposed to asbestos," he said on the occasion of the Asbestos Awareness Week and asked workers to get tested for illness linked to asbestos or crystalline silica.

Asbestos is a dangerous chemical and is an occupational hazard in some industries. It has been linked to mesothelioma, lung cancer and asbestosis.

Workers can call the Dust Diseases Board (1800 550 027) to arrange for the free tests.
