A new poll has found that women expect to spend more than 150,000 pounds during their lifetime on dieting and getting into shape.

The survey was conducted on 2,000 women.

Survey found that one in ten of all the women claimed that they had lost half a stone in a week and 6 per cent claimed to have lost a stone in two weeks.

Astonishingly, their gym memberships, exercise DVDs, supplements and extra fruit and vegetables cost an average of 2,422 pounds a year.

The survey also found that an average woman over a lifetime spends around 150,164 pounds, yet manages to lose only up to 3lb a year, most of which she puts back on.

Mathematically, this spending works out at 807 pounds for each pound lost.

From the survey, more than half of the women said that a diet to them implied eating less than 1,000 calories a day and a fifth said it was eating less than 800 calories a day.

A third had taken slimming pills to lose weight, 30 per cent had made themselves sick and 11 per cent said they had taken speed or cocaine to increase their metabolism.

Ninety per cent had gone at least a day without eating.
