Will John Lennon's Wife Yoko Ono Win the Legal Battle?

by Hannah Punitha on Apr 24 2008 4:54 PM

John Lennon’s wife Yoko Ono will soon be heading to court to prevent a video company from airing footage of the late Beatle smoking pot.

Owned by Massachusetts-based World Wide Video, the nine-hour clip also shows Lennon talking about putting the hallucinogenic drug LSD in former U.S. President Richard Nixon’s tea.

While World Wide Video claims that Ono does not own the 24 raw tapes and the company is suing her for copyright infringement, the Late Beatle’s widow currently has the tapes and is trying to ban the video from the public domain.

The tapes in question show three days in Lennon’s life in February 1970, before Beatles’ split.

"The decision that should be made in the case is who in fact does have the copyright. We’re saying that we legitimately own the copyright to this film," Contactmusic quoted Joseph Doyle, World Wide Video’s lawyer, as saying.

The company dished out more than 1 million dollars and was on the verge of premiering it last year when an order from Ono’s legal team made them scrap the screening altogether.

The case is due for hearing on 30 April (08).
