Nearly 3000 families took part in a national health survey which found the Punjabi community to be the most obese. Calorie rich food, high on diary products was thought to be a significant reason for these statistics.
Keeping the national average of 13 percent for women and 9 percent for men as a benchmark, the average percentage of overweight people in Punjab was found to be the highest in the country at 30% for women and 22% for men. Kerala came second with 28.1 per cent women and 17.8 per cent men obese.
AdvertisementProf Kamala Gupta from The International Institute of Population Studies, Mumbai, and team member of the survey committee explained the reason for high rates of obesity in Punjab. She said, "Punjabis have a calorie-rich diet, with heavy intake of dairy products and relatively lesser use of green vegetables and fiber. This could be one of the reasons that obesity has emerged as a serious concern here."
Enough reasons for Punjabis to revamp their diet.
