Consumer organization Which? has warned that most sun lotions being sold by supermarkets are not offering the protection that they claim to.

Marks and Spencer was the worst offender with its sun lotion being culpable of providing less than 50% the sun protection factor it claimed.

Which? tested 14 sunscreens which claimed to be SPF 15, but Marks and Spencer lotion scored just SPF 7.1 on this. Additionally Tesco's Sun Protection Medium has a score of SPF 12. Which? failed any lotions that did not pass the score of 12.5.

"Some could give you far less protection than you expect." the watchdog revealed.

The best product according to the organization was Sainsbury's £3 factor 15 Sun Protection Lotion and Asda's £3 Sun System.
