The consumption of Vitamin D is seen to be beneficial for many reasons and several studies have revealed that deficiency of this vitamin may lead to health issues.
However this vitamin is not without side effects. Kerrie Sanders of the University of Melbourne in Australia and colleagues reveal that high doses of vitamin D increased the risk of falls in elderly women.
AdvertisementThe study included 2,256 women aged 70 and older who received high doses of the vitamin. Some patients got as much as 5,00,000 international units. However the researchers discovered that high dose of vitamin D increased falls by 15% and fractures by 26% as compared to placebo.
The details appear in last week's issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association.
