New plans announced by transport ministers in the UK call for seizing the uninsured vehicle and levying fine of up to £1,000. The Department of Transport said that annually uninsured drivers kill 160 people, injure 23,000 and increase every motorist's insurance by £30 a year.

"The insurance industry needs to work with Government to ensure that its database holds the right information at the right time – so that for example, law-abiding motorists are not wrongly accused of being without insurance especially if they change insurers," an AA spokesman told The Daily Telegraph.

Under the new plans, the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency will check every vehicle's insurance each month and send notices in the event of lapsed insurance.
