Leading surgeons in UK are planning to carry out the country's first face
and hand transplant. This surgery has been performed in France before this.
A team of surgeons at the Royal Free Hospital in North London is assessing
patients who are suitable for a combined hand and face transplant and are now
waiting for a suitable donor match.
Surgical experts at the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
(Nice) have expressed the need for more information on the possible risks and
benefits of hand transplant surgery. Before the patients give consent for the
operation, health professionals should explain the uncertainties and possible
risks to all patients.
