Transplant Facilities Planned in Six Cities Across India

Organ Donation News
Planned under National Organ Transplant Program (NOTP), this is expected to mitigate the misery of patients waiting for such transplants. Patna, Raipur, Bhopal, Bhubaneswar, Jodhpur and Rishikesh are the six centres shortlisted for the facilities. The Centre also plans to strengthen the organ transplantation facility in six existing medical colleges and institutions in Hyderabad, Mumbai, Chandigarh, Varanasi, Lucknow and Kolkata.
“A fund of Rs 600 crore has been sanctioned and the work will be completed in three phases from 2007 to 2013. Establishment of new institutes and strengthening of the existing colleges comes in the second and third phase (2009-13),’’ said Dr Harsh Jauhari, a member of the Transplantation of Human Organ Act (THOA) review committee and chairman of department of transplant surgery at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, New Delhi. The first phase will see development of renal transplantation facilities at Safdarjung Hospital and Ram Manohar Lohia Hospital in Delhi.
By 2020, the government aims to have at least one transplant centre in every state, transplantation activity in every medical college and non-government hospitals.

Is government (State/Central) doing anything to promote awareness among common public regarding cadaver transplant, similar to the programmes done to create awareness for AIDS, eye donatation etc?
