Thousands of people converged at Hyderabad to swallow live fish believed to cure asthma as well as other breathing disorders.

The tradition of disbursing fish medicine began many years ago and is performed by Bathini family in the city. It is believed that a saint gave the wonder cure to Bathini Veeranna Gowd in 1845 and said that all those who wanted the cure should have it free.

"Earlier there used to be very less people. But slowly the number reached to hundreds and then to thousands. And at present hundreds of thousands of people are here to take this medicine and get cured," said B. Harinath Goud, who administers the treatment to patient.

To be fully cured, people must take the medicine for three years. The medicine is a herbal formula, which is placed inside a fish and put into the mouths of patients. It is believed that the fish helps clear phlegm in the lungs as it struggles for survival and thus clears the breath.
