The Allied Health Professions Council of South Africa (AHPCSA) has raised a request to the minister of health to make a change in the nomenclature of such professions, such that the word "therapeutic" is done way with. Following such a change, people in professions of aromatherapy, massage therapy and reflexology will be referred to as practitioners. They will also need to register at the health council.

Tracy Chambers of the SA Association of Health and Skincare Professionals said that the proposed changes would impact the complete industry. Those who aspire to practice reflexology or aromatherapy will need to adhere to the stipulations of the council.
