TN: 93 Mentally Ill Patients Sent to Kilpauk

Around 93 mentally ill destitute people, who were rescued by Corporation authorities in Chennai, have been sent to the Institute of Mental Health in Kilpauk. They had been previously lodged at the Communicable Diseases Hospital in Tondiarpet.

These 93 people are among the 152 rescued by Corporation health workers. Of the remaining people, 20 were sent to a home for the aged in Tondiarpet. while 12 were handed back to relatives as they had left homes due to domestic issues.

Mayor M Subramaniam said that health officials at the IMH would monitor the 93 people for 90 days and would provide necessary treatment. “We will continue to rehabilitate them. In a month’s time, there will be no mentally ill people wandering on roads,” the Mayor said.

Speaking in a function for rehabilitating the mentally ill, the Mayor also promised Rs 500 for health workers involved in rehabilitating mentally ill people.
