The report underlines the fact that many families in India continue to bear the burden of health care expenditure as the government does not contribute much. With public health spending pretty low, household will have to fend for themselves.

"Private health spending accounts for more than 80 per cent of all health spending in India and one of the highest proportions of private spending anywhere in the world," the study added.

The report also said that per capita costs have almost doubled in the last decade with the cost increasing from Rs 11 to Rs 20 in rural areas and from Rs 14 to Rs 28 in urban areas. The report also said that the rich-poor divide continues to widen and that the poor are unable to access healthcare properly.

This out-of-pocket healthcare spending is pushing more families towards poverty, the report warned.
