States which can boast of high speed internet access have also witnessed increasing prescription drug abuse.
The reason for this is the presence of rogue online pharmacies which are able to dispense medication without a doctor's prescription.
"We know we face a growing problem with prescription drug abuse in the United States. One need only look at the statistics for college campuses, where prescription drugs are fast replacing illegal substances, to see the magnitude of the problem," Dana Goldman, director of USC's Schaeffer Center for Health Police and Economics.
The type of drugs abused are narcotic pain killers, anti-anxiety drugs, and sedatives.
