Pro surfers will be subjected to regular drug tests by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP).

This policy will affect athletes and ASP officials as in 2012 they will be regularly tested for performance-enhancing and recreational drugs.

The move follows the death of triple world champion Andy Irons whose postmortem report revealed that heart attack and 'acute mixed drug ingestion' was responsible for his death.

Spokesman for ASP, Dave Prodan said, "We believe this is a natural evolution in enhancing the professionalism of our sport. This motion has the full support of the surfers on tour as they want to be taken more professionally, and believe this is a step in the right direction."
