Legendary actress Suchitra Sen was discharged from a nursing home 17 days after she was admitted with high fever and related complaints.

"She has recovered fully from her illness and is much better now," Pradip Tandon, chief executive officer of Belle Vue Clinic, said Friday.

The 77-year-old actress was admitted to Belle Vue Clinic Oct 9 with high fever and related complaints. Diagnostic tests revealed that she was suffering from a urinary tract infection.

She had to be put on antibiotics, the course of which was completed Monday, doctors said.

"She was being treated with Meronem injections. We stopped giving the injections on Monday. She has regained her strength and is now much better," Kanti Bhushan Bakshi, her personal physician, told IANS.

Suchitra's stay in the nursing home was marked by an unprecedented security blanket with no one except her daughter Moon Moon Sen and some very close relatives allowed to meet her.

Suchitra, who strode the Bengali film industry like a diva in the 1950s and 60s, left the industry in 1978 after a career of over 25 years and since then has been living in Garboesque seclusion.

Her pairing with Bengali matinee idol Uttam Kumar produced one box office hit after another. Indians outside West Bengal remember her for her powerful performance in the phenomenal 1975 Gulzar film "Aandhi".

In August 2006, Suchitra was in the limelight after her name came up for the Dada Saheb Phalke Award but she could not be given the award since she refused to come out of her seclusion and accept the honour.
