Study Finds Why Jealousy can Literally Blind People

A new study has found why jealousy can literally blind people. The study said that women can actually be blind to something that is in front of them if they feel their partner is attracted to another female.

In an experiment, young couples sat near each other and were asked to rate how attractive pictures of landscapes were. The females were asked to quickly browse through the landscape even as certain occasional unpleasant or graphic pictures appeared in front of them.

Psychology professors Steven Most and Jean-Philippe Laurenceau, from Delaware University report that women who were jealous were not aware of these target pictures as they failed to spot them.

"The language of social relationships is filled with visual metaphor but the influence of social emotions - known to affect moods, behaviour and physical health - appears to permeate so deeply as to affect processes involved in visual awareness," the researchers concluded.

The report appears in the Emotion journal, published by the American Psychological Association.
