A recent study has pointed to an elevated risk of suffering a heart attack or other cardiovascular events due to intake of calcium supplements regardless of its combination with or without Vitamin D.

In order to maintain bone health, post menopausal women are usually prescribed calcium supplements some of which contained Vitamin D and some did not.

The Woman's Health Initiative (WHI) study, which spanned seven years and tracked the lives of 36,000 women, sought to evaluate the cardiovascular effects of taking calcium with vitamin D.

The researchers found an elevated risk of cardiovascular events, especially heart attacks for women consuming calcium with vitamin D supplements. High blood calcium levels can cause hardening of the arteries (calcification) which can up risk of cardiovascular events.
