Scientists revealed that women experienced an anesthetic effect with a mere sight of their partner. Further, holding the hand of a loved could reduce pain and have a calming effect during distress.

As part of the study, 25 volunteers who were going steady with their boyfriends for atleast   6 months, were subjected to mild burns, as they viewed photos of their boyfriends. Subjects reported less pain and discomfort when they viewed photos of their boyfriends.

During another test, a reasonably painful heat stimulus was applied to forearms of volunteers. When they held the hand of their partners or viewed their photos, volunteers experienced less pain and discomfort.

According to educational Psychologist Dr Ludwig Lowenstein, four hugs a day is the secret to a happy marriage.  Exclusive dinner dates with the partner, giving gifts, and romantic walks, also figured as significant factors for a happy marriage.
