Global Hand Hygiene Day is being marked by the Royal Hobart Hospital in a simple way. The Hospital is asking people to ensure that their hands are always clean.
"In Australia alone there are over 200,000 hospital acquired infections annually, just in acute care hospitals," spokeswoman Sue Draycott said. "The majority are preventable if we just performed hand hygiene when we should. In Tasmania we're talking about over 2,000 a year."
Diseases like gastroenteritis and influenza can be prevented with adequate hand washing. It is estimated that some 1.4 million people suffer from infections caused while receiving health care.
