Shocking News of Rise in AIDS Cases from Tirupati-Tirumala Hills
The renowned and world famous pilgrimage centre of the Hindus, The Tirumala- Tirupathi hills is also home to more than 200 sex workers, according to the Andhra Pradesh AIDS Control Society.

"We have come across this information through unofficial sources that there is commercial sex activity even in Tirumala. There are about 200-300 sex workers there," Project Director, AP AIDS Control Society, K Chandravadan said.

Apparently, surreptious activities are happening among sex workers in 15 isolated areas in the hills. Another risk prone area for the spread of HIV/AIDS is a place called Chitoor in Andhra Pradesh.

Completely denying this revelation, Executive Officer, Tirupati Tirumala Devasthanam, KV Ramanachary said, "I disagree with the media reports. There are thousands of employees here who are sincere and dedicated. There is no scope for such scandals. We would never allow it."

This is indeed shocking news to devotees world over.

Anything that defies commonsense can be questioned. Although the probability of sex workers being present is not zero, but the values reported with out any supporting data are useless.
Authentic data is required to believe and initiate action, to reduce STD's.

It is only proper that the sources should be named.Otherwise it has to be taken at yet another attempt to defame Hindus. However even if there is an element of truth that sex workers operate in Tirumala it should be possible to spot and rid the place of professional sex workers if any operating.

I don't see any offense on the media report. Its very similar to all other unconfirmed media report and like all other media reports this also carries some flash but i don't see any reason of hue and cry .. where ever there is a need there will be a way to fulfill it. Without curbing the sentiments and religious spirit of the area could be said there no impossibility of that a happening remember sex is also one of the basic physiological need of human. This existence could happen at any equally spirited place. putting religious color is rather to bad.

There are two issues- one act of sex itself and the second 'sex workers' operating in a sacred place like Tirupathi.
Sex spares no one - it is as much a part of human activity as eating. The sex workers usually opearte in any area that has many tourist be it venues of world cup, Olympics or holiday resort. What is important is to investigate rather than giving knee jerk reactions like some of the comments in the report and on this page. If they are operating quietly it is unlikely that the Devasthan officials will know about. Also remember Chitoor is not too far from Tirupathi and the sex workers can be living in Chitoor and still servicing clients in Tirupathi.

I agree with Sunny. We must look at the situation rather rationally and see the root of the matter. Obviously this is not taking place within the temple itself and the devasthan official would not know or care about the issue.

Can you identify the Unofficial Sources. Or these are just views to grabs the attention of other religious group to make it a issue about it.

it is very sad to listen this news even da official should be cautious to give scurrilous remarks on the world famous temple.

i donot agree with the derogatory statement given by media persons that it is home of ***** no of sex workers.

finally, they have to scrutinize the information very carefully before making it public.

It is good to find out the source of the infection, it will be all the more better to take measures to prevent the spread of infection than to talk about the place only.

So what?
AIDS is prevalent at a place where human congregation is there and people are indulgent.Tirumala is no exception.Consider any olympic games or any world cup venue, where large people gather, the prostitutes(male and female) make their presence even before spectators arrive.Let us worry more about the prevention of the disease rather than the place.
