Schoolboy Allergic to Sun

by Rajshri on Dec 18 2009 9:06 PM

Ten-year-old David Middleton has a unique problem - he is allergic to the sun, which forces him to don a special "space suit" every time he ventures out into the sun.

David lives in Bromsgrove, Worcs and is believed to be suffering from a variant of a condition called Xeroderma Pigmentosum. Here the skin does not heal when it is exposed to UV rays of the sun. If David spends even a few minutes under direct sunlight, he suffers blistered burns.

The young boy also needs to apply factor 50 sun cream every two hours in order to protect his skin. David though has refused to bow before his illness and wants to live life like a normal boy.

"Everyone at school wants to be like David – he is the only child who gets to be a spaceman everyday," said stepfather John Middleton. The boy wears an astronaut-style helmet and protective clothing whenever he goes out.
