The world-famous god man and Spiritual leader Sri Sathya Sai Baba passed away at his Sathya Sai super specialty hospital at Puttaparthi in Andhra Pradesh's at 7.40 am this morning due to multi-organ failure. The final cause of death as it is usually in this condition declared as cardio-respiratory failure.

He was admitted to the hospitals on March 28 with problems of breathing. His condition has been critical for the last few days and he was put on ventilator support and was undergoing regular hemodailysis.

Multi-Organ Failure is commonly due to infection or injury (either accident or post surgery) where there maybe blood loss and hypo-perfusion of organs or a combination of both injury and sepsis. There is usually an uncontrolled inflammatory response called systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS). Respiratory failure occurs commonly in the first 72 hours and the membranes of the lungs fail to exchange of oxygen and carbon-di-oxide – this causes accumulation of carbon-di-oxide in the tissues making the cells of the body sick and dysfunctional. Following the lungs other organs start failing like the kidney, liver, heart and there may also be gastro-intestinal bleeding. Mortality from such condition varies and is anything between 30% to 100%. This has not changed much since 1980 despite all the advancement in care of the patients.

The doctors and the police have appealed to his followers to be calm and not rush to hospital. The roads to the hospital have been blocked and shops have been ordered to close at the town of Puttaparthi. His followers came from all walks of life. He sustained a hip fracture in 2006 and since then he was confined to a wheel chair and gave darshan from his car or a portable chair.

There are no real miracles that happen in the world of medicine and Baba was no different. His condition worsened despite the best care and he succumbed in the end leaving many of his millions of followers distraught.

He was born on 23 November 1926 in a modest family in Puttaparthi as Satyanarayana Raju and at the age of 14 declared himself a reincarnation of Shirdi Sai Baba. His trust is estimated at over Rs.50,000 crores. How the trust is likely to be controlled is likely to be an issue over the next few weeks. One can now only pray that the good work of the trust continues and helps people overcome their suffering – a small miracle is required to sustain it and this is where one last miracle is required from the Baba.
