Samples of Many Wrestlers Test Positive for Banned Substances at 57th National School Games

The National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) has revealed that around 10 percent of the blood and urine samples of wrestlers that it has tested during the 57th National School Games, held between December 28 and January 3, has come back positive for using banned substances.

In total, NADA has collected over 81 samples, 31 from boxing, 30 from wrestling and 20 from weightlifting.

The agency said that while it is still awaiting results for the samples of boxing and weightlifting, three wrestlers were testing positive for using a banned substance known as furosemide, which is a diuretic.

Announcing the results, NADA director general Rahul Bhatnagar said that strict action will be taken against both the schools and the wrestlers in question. “There have always been talks that doping is prevalent among school-level athletes. This is a disturbing trend and we will take this up with the concerned authorities to take serious action against not only the sportspersons but also the coaches, support personnel and administrators”, Bhatnagar said.
