The four-week long conference was inaugurated on March 3 and will continue till March 31.

The event has also been an occasion to honour numerous social activists from various fields with awards for their work in the cause of women's empowerment.

Among the award winners are Prof. Mool Chand Sharma, Vice Chancellor of Central University of Haryana and noted film actress-cum-director, Nandita Das.

According Prof. Sharma, women from the backward areas and the rural sectors have been the worst hit on account of the prevailing global meltdown, affecting overall economy.

"The worse effect of the global meltdown will be felt by the women because women from unorganised sector, rural sector and the agricultural sector were the worse affected. Therefore this conference is taking place at the most opportune time," he added.
