Residents Protest "stealth" Tax on Rubbish Bins

by Rajshri on Jun 3 2008 3:55 PM

South Cambridgeshire District Council is refusing to empty wheelie bins brought by people on the Internet triggering an outcry from people in this area.

People here are protesting the so-called ''stealth tax'' after the council said they had to pay 120 pounds for one green recycling bin and one black rubbish bin. Some people felt the price to be too high and purchased the bins online from a German fiorm.

These bins do not have the logo of the Council and hence they are refusing to collect rubbish disposed in such bins.

"This seemed suspiciously like a stealth tax from the outset, and this confirms it," said Matthew Elliott, of the TaxPayers' Alliance. "The council gets paid a huge amount of council tax already, and yet it seems set on using every trick in the book to squeeze more money out of people. It's simply spiteful to refuse to collect the bins."

However the council said it was simply trying to recoup some costs involved in supplying the bins.
